Mastiff like dogs can be
traced back 3000 years to Egyptian artifacts. The
mastiff's were used as dogs of war up to the 17th
century. They were also used to hunt bears and
wolves. They are considered a working breed and
have been used as cart dogs, pack dogs as well as
guard dogs. The Mastiff is also called the
English Mastiff. There are also Bull Mastiffs. A
smaller (120 lbs. average) breed developed around
1860 in England and used for guard dogs against
poachers.
